Course Report - January 2012
The new yardage plates are now installed on the tees ready for summer competitions.... click here to read more.

Winter Programme
Bunker design -  Many will see a new shape to certain bunkers around the course. These changes will enable the ball to be gathered into the traps via the natural contours, especially when ground conditions are hard and fast. This design is more in keeping with the type of course we have and should be back in play by April.

1st Green & run up - As many will see the run up to the new 1st green has been made flatter to accommodate shots that are low and chasing. Previously the big hump front left of the green made this shot more difficult and with a flatter run up is more in keeping with other parts of the course. The new turfs laid on the run up have taken really well due to a warm winter so far.

Immovable obstruction re fairway markers - The new fairway markers are IMMOVABLE obstructions and relief can be taken Under Rule 24-2 if your stance is impeded by one or if your ball rests on a marker. A copy of the rule will be put up on the local rules board in the clubhouse shortly.

Professional Shop
The Professional shop improvements are due to commence on Monday 13th February. The works will take around three weeks to complete. Ian will be running a temporary shop from the front office during this time. All the usual golf services will be provided, green fees, competition entries etc, as well as a selection of gloves, balls, tees etc.

Ian is currently running a sale in order to try and clear the decks so that there is less  stock to store away during the build time. Please pop in and grab a bargain and help reduce the storage requirements!

Annual Handicap Review
The annual handicap review has been completed, we have sent emails confirming adjustments to members who have an email account. A master copy of the audit has been posted on the notice board. I would like to encourage members to check the notice board to see if your handicap has been adjusted.

As part of the review members who have not played the required three qualifying rounds will now have an inactive handicap (represented by an” i” next to your handicap). Members who have found it difficult to play in qualifying competitions should consider taking advantage of the supplementary score system to help them to regain/maintain their active status. Any questions or help needed just ask the pro shop.

Happy Golfing for 2012.

The BDGC Golf Academy is proving to be a success with a high proportion of former members graduating into the main club. The aim moving forward is to build on the strong foundations and look to continue to convert as many as is feasible into the club. As at this moment in time we have 38 members with 11 lady academy members and will be looking to recruit new members this year.

We continue to organise informal Sunday ‘roll up’s’ each week subject to existing full members teeing restrictions and I take the opportunity to join them every couple of weeks to be on hand to offer advice and guidance. The club has decided to hold monthly Sunday competitions in order to give existing academy members the opportunity to gain experience of stableford competitions and attaining club handicaps in anticipation of those that reach the end of their two year cycle joining the main club. In addition, over the last year, the club has allowed academy members to participate in the Monthly 12 Hole Evening Stableford Competitions on notional handicaps of 28 gentlemen and 36 ladies. The purpose of this is to give academy members a chance to meet existing members in a more friendly and social golfing setting. By all accounts this has been a success and we hope to continue this in 2012.

An induction morning for new academy joiners has been pencilled in for March 17th and we intend to continue to hold throughout the year regular group short game sessions hosted by Ian and James in the proshop as a way of a refresher. Former academy members are integrating well into the main club with a special mention going to Adrian Jenkins who last summer entered and won his first midweek stableford competition. Congratulations to Adrian, whose handicap I am reliably informed, is very much on the way down.
