This event is the pinnacle of the Junior golfing calendar at Banstead Downs, which is why it is played during the Easter school holidays, at a time when the course is generally in fantastic condition.
Ross McGowan, who is a winner on the European Tour winning the Spanish Masters in 2009 and a previous member of the juniors at Banstead Downs has kindly donated a trophy which will be presented to the winner of the scratch event over 36 holes. In addition, Jim Murray, our 2008 Men’s Captain donated a trophy which will be awarded to the best net score over 36 holes. Further prizes will be awarded for morning and afternoon rounds. There is a prize table which has kindly been sponsored by Callaway Golf.
In addition clubs will be playing for the Banstead Trophy, with the winner being the team with the lowest total net score over 36 holes.
The event is a qualifier for the Daily Telegraph Junior Golf Championships in 2012 and it is also a qualifier for the Surrey County Golf Union Order of Merit, so it represents an opportunity for players to score points, in the early part of the season to qualify for the end of season Surrey Junior Masters.
With the recent improvements to the course, which includes the addition of a number of new bunkers, the extension to 5 holes increasing the par for the course to a Par 71, CSS 72 it will ensure a tough challenge for all competitors.
The day’s golf will then be followed by refreshments and a prize giving in the clubhouse. The clubhouse has been refurbished, which includes the opening of a brand new conservatory. With mores space available we have been able to increase the numbers of entries available and we look forward to hosting players from across Surrey at this prestigious event.
